Sale’s lower ERA, higher strikeout rate and lower home-run rate give Atlanta a strong starting point at home. Yamamoto’s lower WHIP is the counterweight. The useful test is who keeps runners off base before the hardest contact arrives. A solo extra-base hit and the same swing after two free passes produce very different innings.

Earl’s call

Earl picks Atlanta behind Sale and home field. The pitching edge has to survive the first free baserunner and the late innings. Power, contact and discipline, running pressure, and the available relievers remain the four checks as this game unfolds.

Release facts checked October 6, 2026. Pitcher numbers are regular-season statistics. Postseason team totals include completed games through October 5. The current starter matchup is editorial analysis, separate from the existing simulation below.

THE LAB · OUR SIMULATION

Our simulation

ESPN MLB completed box scores and play records, August 15–October 5. We apply the Lab measures, fit their relationship to the scoring margin, then sample possible results from the scoring errors observed in completed games.

Los Angeles Dodgers45.3%
Atlanta Braves54.7%

Standard deviation4.4 runs

Standard deviation shows how widely the simulated scoring margins vary. A larger number means a less steady outcome; it is not the error bar on the win percentage.

Run pressure15%-0.30-0.0 runs

Positive effects favor Atlanta Braves; negative effects favor Los Angeles Dodgers. Both offense and defense enter the net factors. Home-court / field term +0.2 runs. These effects explain the fitted baseline; the simulation also varies its fitted coefficients and game outcomes.

Model inputs, variability and validation

Last 30 completed games with a five-game neutral net-factor prior. Power uses ISO; discipline uses (BB − K)/PA; running pressure uses (SB − 2 CS)/PA. Bullpen leverage uses relief traffic in inning seven or later within two runs: (2 × runs + baserunners)/PA, blended with whole-bullpen runs per inning. This is an editorial close-game pressure measure, not published leverage index. New MLB editorial weights 35/30/15/20 percent. Profiles use Completed games through October 5, 2026. Historical calibration uses only each game’s earlier factor data; 530 completed games fit the margin and home advantage.

Chronological check 127 held-out games; margin RMSE 4.1 runs; Brier score 0.248 (50/50 baseline 0.250; lower is better). The final fit then uses all available earlier games. This check is not proof of future calibration.

Outcome noise resamples observed scoring-margin errors, preserving the shape of the available results instead of imposing a bell curve. Bootstrap fits capture some uncertainty in the fitted coefficients. Between-batch win-rate standard deviation 2.7 percentage points. Monte Carlo sampling standard error 0.16 percentage points applies to the unsplit positive-margin frequency; it excludes model error. Zero-margin trials (0.3%) are split equally to estimate the final winner. That is an explicit overtime assumption, not a modeled overtime system.

Injuries, starting lineup changes, rest, travel and postseason rotation changes are not adjusted. The model uses no market odds. Forecast snapshot October 6, 2026 at 4:02 PM UTC-05:00; only confirmed regular-season or playoff games in the following seven days qualify.
